40th Anniv Of Liberation of Colditz signed Stephens & Scott.
8 May 85 BFPS 1945 VE Day Special postmark. Special 40th Anniversary Of Liberation of Colditz cover. Cover depicts Colditz Castle. Colditz Castle was where the Germans hold troublesome and highly prized prisoners of the Allied Officers in WW2. Only 4 British successful escapes were made, the first on 5th January 1942 by Lt Col Neave R E and Lt Luteyn Dutch Army, on 11 June 1942 by Sqn Ldr Padden, on the 9th January 1942 3 British and 3 Dutch Officers escaped but only Flt Lt Fowler and Lt Cdr van Doornick, Dutch Navy reach safety and on and on 15th October 1942 by Maj Littledate K R R C , Maj Reid RASC, Lt Cdr Stephens RNVR and Flt Lt Wardle RAF.
Personally Signed by Lt Cdr W L Stephens RNVR Captured 28th March 1942. Arrived Colditz 3rd Sept 1942. Left Colditz 14th October 1942 Escaped with Major Reid From Colditz returned home. And Lieut M Scott Regiment DLI. Captured 5.1940 arrived in Colditz 27 6 43. Lt Cdr W L Stephens is one of ONLY 4 British successful escapers.
Lt Cdr W L Stephens ML 192 was the first motor launch in the starboard line heading for the Old Entrance, which was hit by a large shell even before Campbeltown had rammed the caisson. The engine room was damaged and she drifted out of control, striking the wall next to the East Jetty. Stephens realised that the craft was doomed, gave the order to abandon ship. Captured at St Nazaire. Certified Copy No 37 of 50. 3 flown backstamp cachets Courier Signed. A rare Colditz item

1 Special Service Brigade at D-Day.Millin is most famous for being one of the few pipers to play
during a World War II Battle. Pipers had traditionally led Scottish troops into battle, however the death
toll among pipers in World War I was so high that the practice was banned by the British high
command. Lord Lovat, however, ignored these orders and Millin, aged 21, played "Hielan' Laddie" and
"The Road to the Isles" as his comrades fell around him on Sword Beach
