letter written by Sir Edward Grey 19 9 25 4 page letter written by Sir Edward Grey British Foreign Secretary (1892-95) in Gladstone's final administration and (1905-16) in Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith's Governments. Was Foreign Secretary at the outbreak of WW1. He issued his famous warning, "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life time. Not the most succesful Foreign Secretary. As Viscount Grey of Fallodon he became Liberal Leader of the House of Lords in 1920. He died on September 7th 1933.
