20th Anniv Operation Paraquat Battle for South Georgia 1982
19th March 2002 Whitehall Operation Paraquat Battle for South Georgia Special Postmark on Set of 10 British Coastlines stamps. 20th Anniversary Operation Paraquat The Invasion and subsequent Liberation of South Georgia in the South Atlantic 19th March 1982. Picture cachet of HMS Endurance with HMS Plymouth behind at anchor in Leith Harbour South Geora after the Argentine surrender.
On 19th March 1982 in Leith South Georgia 40 scrap metal workers came ashore to dismantle and remove scrap metal from the old whaling station and in the shallows which were abandoned in 1965. Without the necessary entry formalities and with the provocative raising of the Argentina flag this improvised landing was without doubt the start of the Junta's planned occupation of the Falkland Islands. HMS Endurance was sent from Port Stanley with a beefed up Royal Marine detachment, later known as Mills Marauders arriving in Grytviken on 24 3 82 Buenos Aires countered this by removing most of the scrap workers , replacing them with Marines put ashore from an armed survey ship. On 3 4 82 and after a fight in which they were heavily outnumbered, Lt Keith Mills, RM decided to end the brave resistance and surrender. South Georgia was eventually Liberated on 25 4 82 after much heroic action in atrocious conditions, the force consisting of HMS' Antrim, Brilliant, Endurance and Plymouth, Submarine HMS Conqueror, RFA Tidespring with M Company 42 Cdo Royal Maries, SAS and SBS Forces were scattered on the Task Force vessels and the surrender was signed in wardroom of HMS Plymouth by Lt Cdr Alfredo Astiz, Argentine Navy on 26 4 82.
