10 Jun 97 - Scampton - Roy Chadwick, Designer of the Lancaster - Special Postmark on 26p Lancaster Stamp The EAGLES NEST Certified copy of 3 Special Eagles Nest Cover picture cachet of Lancaster B111 of No 617 Squadron among 359 Lancsters drops last 'Talboy ' bomb of World War 11 Eagles Nest Berchtesgaden.Black added cachet The Berchtesgaden raid was the last operation of the war for 617 Squadron was the attack on Hitlers Mountain retreat Berchtesgaden on the 25th April 1945. Berchetsgaden had been found by German leader in 1923 and he later built the ville Berghof there - this was the only home that he owned. During 1936 the German leader had been visited there by the former British Prime Minister Lloyd George .The raid on Berchtesgaden involved a round trip of some 1400 miles and employed a total of some 350 aircraft of Bomber Command. To escort them were two Mustang Fighter Squadrons of the American 9th Air Force. 617 provided some 16 Lancasters, which were led by Squadron Leader Brookes. For 617 this was to be the grang finale. The bombing was carried out in cloudless conditions, but there was mist and snow on the mountains and many missed the target. After the bombing, the barracks at Berchtesgaden had taken many hits, and a quarter of the main control centre had been demolished with the administration HQ set of Fire. Signed by L.S.
