No 4 Commando had orders to silence gun batteries and strong points in Quistreham while the remainder of the brigade struck rapidly inland to reach Peqasus bridge and join up with the 6th Airborne Division to help secure the eastern flank. If this flank was not secured the Germans could have occupied the low heights overlooking the Orne and their artillery would have threatened 3rd British Divisions slender hold on Sword beach. As AC 10cB but also signed by Piper Bill Millin. Piper Bill, was personal piper to Lord Lovat, commander of 1 Special Service Brigade at D-Day.Millin is most famous for being one of the few pipers to play during a World War II Battle. Pipers had traditionally led Scottish troops into battle, however the death toll among pipers in World War I was so high that the practice was banned by the British high command. Lord Lovat, however, ignored these orders and Millin, aged 21, played "Hielan' Laddie" and "The Road to the Isles" as his comrades fell around him on Sword Beach.

Personally Signed by Odette Marie Céline Hallowes GC, MBE, Chevalier de la légion d'honneur, (28 April 1912 - 13 March 1995) was an Allied heroine of World War II.Odette Marie Céline Brailly was born in Amiens in the Somme département of France. Her father was the First World War hero Gaston Brailly who was killed at Verdun in 1918 when she was six years old.She met the Englishman Roy Sansom in Bologna and married him in 1931, moving with him to England. Her husband enlisted in 1940. When the War Office requested all French-born residents of London to supply them with photographs of their home towns, Odette volunteered her family album, which contained many useful depictions of the Channel coast. She joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY), and was later asked to train under Colonel Maurice Buckmaster of the Special Operations Executive and return to Nazi-occupied France to work with the French underground. She left her three daughters in the care of her husband. She made a landing near Cannes in 1942, where she made contact with her supervisor, Peter Churchill. Using the code name Lise, she brought him funds and acted as his radio operator.Churchill's operation in France was betrayed by a double agent, and Odette and Churchill were arrested on 16 April 1943 and imprisoned. Under torture by the Gestapo at Fresnes prison in Paris, Odette stuck to her cover story that Churchill was the nephew of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and that she was Peter's wife. The hope was that in this way their treatment would be mitigated.Odette was condemned to death in June 1943 and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She survived the war and testified against the prison guards at a 1946 war crimes trial.Odette's husband had died during her imprisonment and she married Peter Churchill in 1947. They were divorced in 1956.Her third husband was Geoffrey Hallowes.Odette Hallowes was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and was the first of three World War II FANY members to be awarded the George Cross (gazetted 20 August 1946).<Actinic:Variable Name = '1'/> She remains the only woman to have received the George Cross whilst alive, all other female GC awards to date being posthumous. She was also appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur for her work with the French resistance.<Actinic:Variable Name = '2'/>In later life Odette's house was burgled and her GC was stolen but after an appeal it was returned with a note saying 'You, madam, appear to be a dear old lady. I am not all that bad- it's just circumstances. Your little dog really loves me. I gave him a nice pat and left him a piece of meat. Sincerely yours, A Bad Egg. Certified Copy No 42 of 50

Formation Bomber Command Signed Lady Harriss & T Bennett27 Jul 85 BFPS 1892 Formation of Bomber Command Association. Blue flown cachet. Flown from Hatfield in Mosquito. Personally Signed by Lady Harris Wife of the late Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur Harris and personally Signed by Air Vice Marshal D C T Bennett. He was initially told that he would be appointed a Group Capt in Training Command, but when this was downgraded to Squadron Leader, he declined the offer, He was eventually granted the rank of Wing Commander and sent to establish a Navigation School at Eastbourne. Having successfully set up this school, he requested an active assignment and was appointed CO of No 77 Squadron. He flew on operations as often as possible but always with a different crew by replacing that crew's pilot, that way he was able to assess the efficiency of all his crews. April 1942 brought a move to the command of No 10, newly equipped with the four-engined Halifax. Later the same month (27th), he took part in a combined raid by No's 10, 35 and 76 squadron against the Tirpitz. Hit by flak his aircraft caught fire and he set course for Sweden. Unable to make Sweden he ordered his crew to bale out whilst he remained at the controls before making his own escape. Landing in deep snow he located his wireless operator and with the help of friendly Norwegians he managed to cross the border into Sweden and eventually return to Britain resuming command of his squadron one month after baling out and to receive an immediate DSO. However, when No 10 Sqn was posted to the Middle East, he did not accompany them as he was summoned to HQ Bomber Command to see the AOC in C, Arthur Harris, his old CO from the flying boat days. CB DSO*** OBE MC TD. 8 Para Bn Pegasus Bridge 6th June 1944Pearson was attached to the South Lancashire Regiment and served briefly in France during January 1940. On 8 June 1940, after the end of Operation Dynamo, he returned to France with the 6th HLI. He fought in the Battle of France with the Second British Expeditionary Force. He was evacuated on 17th June as part of Operation Ariel. On its return to the United Kingdom, the British 52nd ( Lowland ) Division was assigned to defend the coast whereupon Pearson volunteered to join a special forces unit. He was promoted to the rank of Major and served as second-in-command of 2nd Battalion, 1st Parachute Brigade. Within a fortnight, Pearson was transferred to 1st Battalion by its commander Lieutenant Colonel Eric Down. Pearson was promptly demoted by Down after a rioutous night on the town. Pearson was promoted to the rank of Major for the second time before becoming second-in-command of 1st Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel James Hill.In October 1942, the 1st Parachute Brigade was sent to Tunisia to participate in Operation Torch. Pearson assumed command of 1st Battalion when Hill was badly wounded on 23rd November. For his actions while under heavy fire, Pearson was awarded the Military Cross. At the age of twenty-seven, Pearson was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given command of the 1st Parachute Battalion. Pearson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions in late January and early February, 1943. He was awarded a second DSO for actions during the Battle of Tamera in March.Pearson was awarded a third DSO for his contribution to the Invasion of Sicily. In July 1943, the 1st Parachute Brigade was assigned to capture Primosole Bridge in Sicily, ahead of Bernard Montgomery's 8th Army. Due to high winds, intense flak, and poor flying, less than 20% of the 1,900 men of the brigade landed on target. However, the bridge was captured and Pearson organized a defence. German forces counter-attacked the following day and the paratroopers were forced to withdraw. Pearson helped to recapture the bridge by guiding a battalion of the Durham Light Infantry in an attack on the flank of the German infantry holding the bridge. After the Sicilian campaign, Pearson recuperated from an attack of malaria.During the summer of 1944, the commander of the new British 6th Airborne Division, Richarf Gale gave Pearson command of the division's 8th Battalion, which had been formed from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Pearson immediately began preparing the battalion for the Battle of Normandy. On the night of 5 June 1944, the battalion departed England for France. On landing, Pearson was shot in the hand but continued to command. The 8th battalion would go on to destroy several bridges over the River Dives and then take up defensive positions in the Bavent Wood, east of Pegasus Bridge. Pearson was awarded a fourth DSO for his contributions during the Battle of Normandy. On his return to England in September 1944, Pearson surrendered command of the 8th Battalion due to ill health. He then resigned his commission to return to his bakery in Glasgow. In 1947, he rejoined the Territorial Army and commanded the 15th (Scottish Volunteer) Parachute Battalion. Later, he gave up the bakery to turn to farming. In 1951, he was made a Deputy Lord-Lieutenant for Glasgow. In 1967, he was promoted to Brigadier and became Commandant of the Army Cadet Force in Scotland. He became Deputy Lord-Lieutenant for Dumbartonshire in 1979.When he died at the age of 80 in 1995, Alastair Pearson was the most decorated soldier in the British Army. Details picture enclosed. Personally Signed.General Sir A.Farrar - Hockley GBE, KCB,DSO,MC, M Litt ( Oxon ) The son of a journalist, Farrar-Hockley was born in Coventry 8th April 1924. At the outbreak of the war aged 15 ran away from Exeter school early to volunteer for the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1940; he was found out, and had to rejoin properly in 1941. A sergeant at 17, he was not yet 18 when commissioned in November 1942, and was still only 20 when given command of a rifle company in the 6th battalion of the Parachute Regiment, part of the newly formed 1st Airborne Division. He fought with it in Greece, Italy and southern France, earning a mention in dispatches in 1943 and the Military Cross in 1944. Returning to the Gloucester's as a regular officer in 1946 after serving in Palestine, Captain Farrar-Hockley was adjutant of the regiment's 1st battalion when it was sent to Korea late in 1950 as part of the 29th Brigade. The United Nations (mainly American) forces were faring badly against the North Koreans and 350,000 Chinese troops who had just intervened. The brigade acted as rearguard when the Americans withdrew south of the 38th parallel, only to be attacked again on New Year's Day 1951. The Chinese launched another massive offensive on April 22, when the 29th Brigade occupied a defensive position south of the Imjin river with its one Belgian and three British battalions, including the 1st Gloucester s, on the left of the UN line.By dawn on April 24, the Glosters were completely surrounded on a low hill but were ordered to hold on. As they ran out of ammunition, hand-to-hand fighting with bayonets and even beer bottles followed. For his part in this fierce action, Farrar-Hockley was awarded the DSO, normally a decoration for majors and above. Farrar-Hockley, who escaped six times and was recaptured on each occasion but earned a mention in dispatches On his return to the UK in 1953, Farrar-Hockley went to the staff college at Camberley, then rejoined airborne forces to combat the Eoka rebels in Cyprus, and in time for the 1956 Suez landings. After the British show of support for King Hussein of Jordan in 1958 - and a period as a chief instructor at Sandhurst - he was promoted lieutenant colonel, and given command of the 3rd battalion of the Parachute Regiment in 1962. In 1964 "Farrar the Para", as his troops knew him, won his second DSO, during operations against the Radfan tribesmen, 60 miles north of Aden, who, under the influence of Arab nationalists, mined and ambushed the road from the British protectorate on the coast to Yemen. The following year he served as a staff officer in Borneo, in support of the two-year-old Malaysian federation during the confrontation with Indonesia, returning to command the 16th Parachute Brigade in 1966. He went to Northern Ireland as a major-general, when unrest was mounting after the army's arrival in August 1969: the first soldier was killed there in February 1971. Farrar-Hockley left that July, having publicly identified the IRA's role in organising republican violence, and the following month tension rose to new heights when internment without trial was introduced. Relations between the army and the Catholic community deteriorated, the IRA was revitalised, and the departing commander became a potential target for it. Farrar-Hockley moved on to West Germany in October 1971 as commander of the 4th Division for two years. Following three years at the Ministry of Defence, he became general officer commanding South-East District as a lieutenant-general (1977-79), and then took up his final, C-in-C post. Among several honorary appointments, he was colonel commandant of the Parachute Regiment and colonel of the Gloucester Regiment, as well as ADC general to the Queen. His many works of military history included The Somme (1964) and the official, two-volume account of the British part in the Korean war (1990 and 1995). Farrar-Hockley's name was found on an IRA hit list in the 1980s; in 1990, his five-year-old grandson found a bomb attached to a garden hose at his Oxfordshire home. It failed to go off.
